Just wanted to post a quick note about the awesome kick-off I had for my first travelling roadshow earthship presentation deluxe in Alice Springs, Northern Territory.  I wasn't expecting to draw a particularly big crown as the northern territory is notoriously quiet, and especially on a random Tuesday night with a stranger coming from the big smoke..

O K I can't be dissing the territory too much, there was around 50 people who turned up and asked a bunch of interesting questions.  I hope that some of the people who suggested ideas for building on the Aborginal communities around Alice come forward with plans and projects in the future, I would be really keen to come help out or organise projects with communities who are keen. Let's keep that momentum going.  I'd also like to thank Alex from DesertSmart Mob and Alex from ABC Alice Springs radio for their awesome hosting powers and welcoming vibe.  I'm in Darwin now hoping to get something organised here in the coming week so look out Territory!

The Ubuntu Blox concept was invented by Harvey Lacey of Texas, USA. The project was taken up by Haiti Communitere in October 2011 as a means for community outreach, and is currently being run by Tim Overton and Roxanne Duigou, two dedicated volunteers from Canada. The Ubuntu Block project is serving a dual purpose – to clean up the streets and build up the city.

The Ubuntu team are implementing street clean-ups and rubbish collection points to take Styrofoam food containers and film plastic out of the canals and drains around Port-au-Prince to repurpose as building materials. The materials are packed into rice bags and compressed into uniformly sized building blocks using a manual compression machine. The lightweight, flexible nature of the blocks makes them far more earthquake resistant than typical brick or concrete structures. A model Ubuntu home was recently tested for seismic resistance, and passed a simulated 8.2 earthquake with minimal damage.

A month-long community training session began on March 5 at the Resource Center with a group of 24 women from Cite Soleil, teaching the entire Ubuntu process including collection strategies, cleaning methods, using the machine and building structures. Cite Soleil experiences a disproportionate amount of backlash from trash filled canals, since the food containers from more affluent communities collect there on their way out to the ocean, which is why this community has been chosen to pilot the Ubuntu training. Each daily session is aimed at building awareness of the technology, ‘training the trainers’ to take the knowledge and skills back to their community, and empowering women to make a difference for their country. Throughout the training, the Ubuntu team hopes to gain Haitian feedback and perspective on the concept and process.

Earthships Could Transform Philadelphia

from the Sierra Club

Earthship Greenhouse_repairedMore than 40,000 vacant lots, many piled high with illegally dumped tires, blight the city of Philadelphia. High unemployment and crime rates discourage many residents, but not Rashida Ali-Campbell, director of the non-profit, LoveLovingLove, Inc.

In Philadelphia's empty lots and abandoned, decaying buildings (approximately 75,000), Ali-
Campbell sees hope and unlimited possibilities. Her mission is to open a school for low-income residents to learn sustainable building techniques. She plans to bring the first urban Earthship to Philadelphia.

Bringing Earthships back home Featured

Earthship Australia Duuvy JesterThe time has come to get serious about sustainability. We have had over 200 years of resource pillaging, growth addiction and economic aerobics. We have divided and conquered. Harmony is long overdue. Lets turn plagiarism into collaboration and thrive just as nature intended it.

Join Duuvy Jester for a fun, informative talk in the heart of Brunswick. He will be discussing the philosophy, science, physics and practicalities that live within the belly of the world that is Earthship. Hear all about his experiences in the Earthship academy out on the mesa in Taos, New Mexico.

Peace Everyone,

tire_poundingI am excited to write to you about the festival and the success of the Earthship Tent. The festival drew a crowd of over 2000 people, back and forth through the park. People were still arriving as we were leaving at 7pm. God blessed us with a sunny day. The evening before we got some serious rain and we were praying it didn't last. The show was opened with a step show and several of our city representatives came out for support including, Seth Williams ( D primary winner for D.A race) , Jannie Blackwell, Sharif Street, and the Honorable Mayor Michael Nutter. There were many vendors at the festival, there was also a basketball tournament, rides, and entertainment on the stage all day long.
