". . . the Earthship is the epitome of sustainable design and construction. No part of sustainable living has been ignored in this ingenious building."

Earthship Australia

To specifically design and build homes that ...
• Heat and cool themselves naturally via solar/thermal dynamics
• Collect their own power from the sun and wind
• Harvest their own water from rain and snow melt
• Contain and treat their own sewage on site
• Produce a significant amount of food
• Are constructed using the byproducts of modern society like cans, bottles and tires.

To evolve the way humans live on this planet by evolving existing methods of living, home by home.

To make small, believable steps toward slowing down and ultimately reversing the negative impact of human development as it relates to the Earth’s ability to continue to support life.

To present these steps in a way that affords easy understanding and inspires people to act.

To empower people to make positive changes in their own lives to reduce their personal carbon footprint.

"If all the soldiers in all the armies in all the world put down their weapons and picked up tools and started building sustainable, carbon zero housing for all the people of the world our problems would be over and real life for all people would begin."

- Michael Reynolds

Just wanted to post a quick note about the awesome kick-off I had for my first travelling roadshow earthship presentation deluxe in Alice Springs, Northern Territory.  I wasn't expecting to draw a particularly big crown as the northern territory is notoriously quiet, and especially on a random Tuesday night with a stranger coming from the big smoke..

O K I can't be dissing the territory too much, there was around 50 people who turned up and asked a bunch of interesting questions.  I hope that some of the people who suggested ideas for building on the Aborginal communities around Alice come forward with plans and projects in the future, I would be really keen to come help out or organise projects with communities who are keen. Let's keep that momentum going.  I'd also like to thank Alex from DesertSmart Mob and Alex from ABC Alice Springs radio for their awesome hosting powers and welcoming vibe.  I'm in Darwin now hoping to get something organised here in the coming week so look out Territory!

Bringing Earthships back home Featured

Earthship Australia Duuvy JesterThe time has come to get serious about sustainability. We have had over 200 years of resource pillaging, growth addiction and economic aerobics. Earthship Ironbank Easter Workshop 2012

Written by

This is a photo of the workshop, Easter 2012 at my place in the Adelaide Hills, Ironbank. We started construction of the greenhouse wall which had to be stepped down into natural ground to accommodate the slope to the north west (earthship faces north). 24 people came to help out over the two days. We mainly concentrated on the tyre pounding but also did some bottle bricks. It was a great weekend! I met some great people and we got a lot of work done.

I've talked to our local council about gaining approval for this earthship to be a bed and breakfast. People will be able to come and stay in an earthship for a night or two and maybe fall in love with them like I did.

When I've got the plans finalised I'll post them here so that people can understand a bit better what this thing is going to look like.

I also have a local engineer on board to do the calcs on the structure (which will have a ferro cement vaulted roof like the Simple Survival Model Earthship) so I will feedback info on how that goes too... stay tuned!

cheers, Marty

Earthship Ironbank in Australia

Hello Earthship People!

Jonah Reynolds has been very kind to setup this Blog for me... to share my experience of building an Earthship in Adelaide, Australia.

We started construction in July 2009 when Michael Reynolds was giving a public lecture in Adelaide (which was totally booked out with over 400 people in attendance). We pounded about 60 tyres in three hours with help from 25 people - mainly architecture students.

Hi, my name is Rachel and I am a recent academy graduate from Melbourne, Australia.

I’ve been asked to write down my story.  It’s always been natural for me to tell stories hence writing it down, and as a bit of a retrospective, is a bit out of my field of experience but probably not a far stretch.  As many of my academy classmates can tell you, going to Taos and learning from the masters of Earthships in that crazy environment is a really rewarding and unforgetable experience.

Since this whole Earthship thing has taken off in the past few years, particularly in Australia, I’ve felt the urge to get off my ass and get involved.  And that’s pretty much what happened.  I first heard of Earthships about 6 years ago.  Saw the film maybe 3 years ago, joined the then fledgling Melbourne group 2 years ago and now find myself trying to get things off the ground in Melbourne and across Australia, uniting a very diverse but committed group of people in their desires to see an Earthship (and really a whole lot of them) dotted around the Australian landscape.  Well before I get too far ahead of myself, in my past life (and when I need a bit of cash) I have worked as an historian, hence my brain and narratives work better chronologically.
